Case XX Knife Patterns by Number
Ever wonder what type of knife your Case XX knife is? Is it a stockman, trapper, canoe, jack knife, or what? Case uses a unique numbering system to mark the different knife patterns they make. You can find the pattern number stamped into the tang of the knife blade. The tang is the bottom of the blade, next to the handle when the blade is open. The tang will usually be four or more numbers, and sometimes may also consist of some letters. The first digit in this number represents the type of material used to make the handle. For example, a "5" represents a stag handle, and a "6" represents a bone handle. The second digit of the number is how many blades the knife has. The last two or more digits or letters represents the knife pattern. For example, an "18" would mean the Case knife was a medium stockman, where a "265L" would mean the knife was a mid folding hunter pattern.
Now combining all this, if your Case XX knife had the number "6318" stamped on the tang of the blade, this would mean it was a medium stockman (18), with three blades (3), and had a bone handle (6). If it was stamped "51749L", it would be a mini copperlock (749L), with a stag handle (5), and one blade (1).
